Samuel Uyoyooghene Okposo Takes A Bow

Sammie with his daughter.
It was 1970, and the late Deaconess Helen Okposo was heavy with child.  It turned out to be a turbulent pregnancy.  There were doubts that the child would be born alive. During that period, many prominent prophets and apostles told her she was “carrying a world.”

It was prophesied that the child would be famous and proclaim the gospel worldwide. She never forgot the prophecy; whenever Sammie experienced any storm in life, she would remind him that the devil had lost the battle over his life.

She always said: “the devil has been wrestling and contending for Sammie's destiny right from when I carried him in my womb, but we have the victory through Christ our Lord.”

She always prayed that his gifts would announce him to the world and that he would become a valuable instrument in the hands of God.

Samuel grew up in a strict God-fearing home where the standards were all about Jesus. They would wake up in the morning, read the Bible and do the same before going to bed at night. He said, " we were also taught to read the Bible and Bible stories on our own, and attending Sunday School was not negotiable."

Sammie's Dad was one of the founding elders of their family church, the Gospel Church of Christ, with headquarters in Lagos. The branch of the church in Warri actually started in their home. At the time, Chief Warre Okposo served as the church’s choirmaster. Oh, how he loved hymns.

His favorite hymn was titled "He Lives"
I serve a risen Saviour, He's in the world today
I know that He is living, whatever men may say
I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer
And just the time I need Him He's always near

He lives! He lives! Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me
Along life's narrow way
He lives! He lives! Salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives?
He lives within my heart.

It was thus very disappointing that a child brought up in a Christian home would decide to pursue a career in music - especially secular music.

Sammie left Warri for Lagos without the blessing of his dad and other family members. Secretly like all mothers do, the late Deaconess Helen Okposo prayed and blessed her son, seeing he had chosen his purpose in life. This was the time his mates were gaining entry into universities.

Sammie said, " It was music for me."

He lived to prove everyone wrong. Especially those who thought he would not amount to anything pursuing a career in music.
In the coming days, we will publish the life and times of the boy that grew to be a voice for gospel music in Africa. We had worked tirelessly on his autobiography for the past many months. I have in my hands, an unfinished work and so many questions.

In one of my last conversations with Sammie, he wanted the world to experience God's presence when he ministered. That meant more to him than anything else. He asked me to watch the clip titled " Grace Is Available"

Sammie is survived by two children (Alula, 28 and Fejiro, 14), his lovely wife Ozioma, brothers and sisters.

Alula Okposo (28) mourned her dad with instagram post " “The real truth is I feel like a blank sheet of paper .... just waiting for the different strokes from the paint brushes, God knows best because I know you are definitely jamming with the angels, changing it for them, letting them know say Na your voice bad pass ... anyways make we leave story for writer. BIG LOVE My G, RIP”

Felix Osioh and Sammie Okposo

I had asked Sammie who his best friend was in this life, and he said: Felix Osioh.
I recently made a connection with Felix. He was genuinely heartbroken. They had met in secondary school many years ago. They had no secrets between them.

Felix wrote this:

"To my one and only brother from another mother. Sammie, you were a friend and brother like no other on this earth. I am at peace knowing you completed your God-given assignment here on earth. You did everything with distinction. You will remain the very best of God’s anointed voice of praise and worship in this lifetime.
You always wanted me to enjoy all your special moments with you regardless of how much it cost. You just needed me to be there.  You are my ride-or-die in this LIFE. Not even death can separate us, I boldly confess. I am assured knowing that you are finally resting with our Lord Almighty. My tears do not cease to flow. I am sure going to miss you! Sammie, you will forever remain in my heart until we meet to part no more.

No one expected his demise."

It will be hard to say goodbye.

To be continued...
